In the Indian Premier League (IPL), the state of Rajasthan is represented by the professional cricket team known as the Rajasthan Royals. The team, which has its headquarters in Jaipur, was one of the eight original teams that participated in the 2008 inaugural IPL season.

Sanju Samson currently serves as the team's captain. Manoj Badale, an Indian businessman and co-founder of Blenheim Chalcot, owns the team. Under Shane Warne's leadership, the team won the IPL once, in 2008.

Shane Watson, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Sanju Samson all made their mark for the Rajasthan Royals before going on to play for the Indian national cricket team. The team has a reputation for finding and developing young talent.

The Rajasthan Royals, the team with the lowest offer when the IPL franchises were first sold, won the inaugural season as unlikely champions. They have reached the playoffs four times since then and finished sixth or lower seven times. Off the field, they've also been the target of controversy. There was a dispute over ownership in the courts in 2010. Following an investigation into the franchise's involvement in illegal betting and match-fixing, three of their players were arrested in 2013 on charges of spot-fixing.

The Royals were well-known for their "Moneyball" buying strategy, in which they selected relatively unknown talents and supported them. Throughout the long term they uncovered such names as Ravindra Jadeja, Sanju Samson and Yusuf Pathan. But they also bought some of the most expensive things. They purchased Britain allrounder Ben Stirs up for Rs 12.5 crores (about US$1.7 million) and India left-arm quick bowler Jaydev Unadkat for Rs 11.5 crore ($1.6m), both in 2018; They paid Rs 16.25 crore (2.2 million) in 2021 to acquire South African all-rounder Chris Morris, but they released him prior to the 2022 auction.

Before Rahul Dravid took over for two years in 2011, Shane Warne was in charge during the Royals' first season of success. After that, Shane Watson served as captain for a brief time before delegating to Steven Smith in 2014. Ajinkya Rahane took over as captain after Smith was suspended in 2018 for ball tampering. In 2019, Smith took over again, but the Royals let him go after two disappointing campaigns and appointed Sanju Samson captain for the 2021 campaign. Around that time, they also appointed Kumar Sangakkara, a former captain of Sri Lanka, as director of cricket.

In front of the 2022 super sale, they held Samson for Rs 14 crore ($1.8m), Jos Buttler for Rs 10 crore ($1.3m) and youthful Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for Rs 4 crore ($500,000). They let go of Jofra Archer and Stokes, two of their biggest stars from previous seasons.

Rajasthan Royal Squad 2023 Team List

Delhi, India: Nine players were purchased by the Rajasthan Royals during the IPL 2023 mini-auction in Kochi on Friday, bringing their total squad strength to 25. The most expensive acquisition for RR was West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder, who cost them Rs 5.75 crore.

Adam Zampa, an Australian spinner, cost RR 1.5 crore, and Joe Root, an England batter, cost RR 1 crore. They also paid Rs 50 lakh for the services of Donovan Ferreira, a South African with no cap.

Five uncapped Indians were also added to RR's squad.

In total, RR spent 9.85 crore at the auction to acquire the nine players necessary to complete the team.
